The Newfolden American Legion sponsored a Memorial Day Essay Contest for 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th graders at Newfolden Elementary. Prizes were awarded to the top three in each grade.
Memorial Day by Elizabeth Jarshaw Memorial Day is a day when we remember those who died on the battlefields during the Civil War. Three years after the war ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of the organization of Union Veterans Grand of the Republic (GAR)established Memorial Day as a time to decorate our nation’s graves of the deceased soldiers with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared it should be May 30. In short, it is a day to remember all the Civil War veterans.
Every Memorial Day weekend, we usually go to Argyle, MN to the Legion Auxiliary ceremony. I carry flags and help in the kitchen. My Grandma Mary makes me carry flags and carry them in parades. We get cakes and cupcakes to share with everybody and talk about the Veterans who had served in the Civil War. There are also some speeches that parents give about the son or daughter who died on the battlefield.
Memorial Day is very special to me because my Grandpa was a veteran and my Uncle Homer (Louis) used to be in the army. I also like going to cemeteries and seeing all the graves of someone special. My Grandpa died when I was very young, my sister never got to see him. I like to clean the graves of Veterans when I have time during the day. I also had a great uncle who served in the Vietnam War, he did not die though, he is still very healthy and in good shape.

Gen. John A. Logan wanted Memorial Day on May 30th. The Legion in Argyle, MN has a ceremony on Memorial Day at the Veterans Memorial across the street from the Legion.
