Rural Reflections

It was such a Good Week

I recently lived a week that gave me a lot of insight into my own world. I also received a nice drop shipment of inspiration and intervention that was unexpected and beyond my understanding. Plus a nice surprise.

First off, an easy one. I have a mild infatuation with Jeeps and occasionally find one for sale. These single-serving obsessions last a few days until the vehicle is sold, to my relief. I saw another early 90s Jeep for sale this past week, but it really had no effect on me, I knew I didn’t need it, it wasn’t something substantial and I quickly forgot about it. I informed Lisa about my little triumph over my material desire, which made her smile. I did decide to treat myself to a new float switch for the sump pump and a used book of cowboy poetry as consolation.I think my actions are catching up to my values.

Thursday night was the start of the summer concert series. There is something about young talent that makes me smile. The group “Breaking Up the Boys Club,” is from Bagley and has been getting some impressive concert dates. Thursday night their date was with us and their music and presentation charmed the group of attendees. I believe the oldest of the group was 18 and they displayed a very mature song list. It was awesome and, to my surprise, they sang “16 Tons” by Tennessesse Ernie Ford which was my favorite song of the night.

I saved the best of my week for last. I have a regular set of stops for my Saturday morning. That particular morning, my stops did not exist, The ones that did exist, did not interest me. I didn’t lift weights as the gym just didn’t seem important for that day. I decided to just go home just a few minutes after I had arrived in town. I have passed by Petro Pumper without getting coffee maybe five times in the last five years. Saturday was six, noteworthy in itself and important for the timing of the next few minutes.

I now had no plan, I was outside my schedule and my timing was off. I have a set of gloves in my truck for moving turtles across the road but they haven’t seen a turtle in two summers. Saturday morning I found a medium-sized turtle heading for water across the tar road. I used my gloves and moved the turtle in the direction she was heading and placed her close to the water in the ditch.

Seems like just a good deed and that was it. When I was in the ditch, I began hearing a low rumble like thunder. It was a fairly large group of motorcycles enjoying a Saturday morning drive. Their route was right where the turtle had been sitting. They could have hit the turtle and injured her which may have also caused an accident. Someone had a plan for me that morning which was better than the one I had abandoned.

And then my good week got even better. Saturday night, three people were looking for kettle corn at the grocery store in Carrington, North Dakota. Their sweet and salty master called them together from a starting that two of the three shared; Viking. It was my brother Dave and Badger residents Jon and Shelly Melby from Badger. Shelly grew up in Viking and is an old friend and classmate. That meant that 66 percent of the people in search of kettle corn in Carrington once were Viking Trotters. A statistical anomaly, and a darn nice picture. It was such a good week.
