Memorial Day Essay by Jorah Smith Why do we even celebrate Memorial Day? Memorial Day is the day we all take time to remember the people who have served in the military and sacrificed their lives. What’s the point of remembering these fallen soldiers? This holiday started in 1868 being called ‘Decoration Day’. People would put toys and flowers on the graves of Union soldiers. The people would do this on May 30th.

Things we can do to remember them is to go to their graves and set flags and flowers there. Another thing is to ask your neighbors if they had family members in the wars that passed. Sometimes people like to talk about their family members that served.

Why do we need to celebrate Memorial Day? We need to celebrate Memorial Day to remember the people who gave up their lives to let us be free! That would take some strength in your heart to let your life go! Remember that we have a free country because of them. Raise those flags high!
