Gator Girls Take the Mat @ Bemidji Blue Ox

The BGMRTC Girls wrestling team traveled to Bemidji Dec 21 and competed in the 2nd Annual Bemidji Blue Ox Girls Wrestling Invite. The Gators had three competing in the Varsity division and two in JV. Over 300+ girls attended the tournament with over 27 High School teams being represented. Gator girls came up 9th overall in team points. Next up for the Gators both Boys and Girls teams are on the road January 3-4 for Rumble on the Red Tournament in Fargo.

Greenbush Middle-River Sophomore Sarah Pulk had a strong showing in the 170 division. Seeded 1st in the tournament and 1st in the State of Minnesota, she held her ranking in Gator fashion. Sarah would start the day with a Tech Fall (19-4) in the first period against BHVPP, a first period fall against Roseau in the quarter final, and another Tech Fall (19-4) against Ivy Griffin of Bismark Legacy early in the 2nd period. Sarah entered the finals against undefeated sophomore Makaya Gotchie of Bemidji. Sarah’s strength was too much for Gotchie as 3 take downs and a nearfall would put the match at 13-2 and securing a pin with 0:30 left in the first period. Sarah would then claim her second consecutive Blue Ox Invite championship.
Senior Cheyene Wergin (HWT) went 2-3 for the day. Wergin pinned McKenzie Ghinter of Bemidji and Aaliyah Ear of Bismarck Legacy for a 4th place finish.
Madilyn Pulk (148) had a strong showing. The 8th grader won her first round with a Fall at 1:32 against Wadena-Deer Creek. From there she would go on to defeat Natalia Zoller of Thief River falls and Claire Kvant of St. Michael-Albertville. Pulk would find herself in the finals against a familiar opponent in Elora Wagner of Bertha-Hewitt Verdale. The rematch of these two from the following weekend showed to be a battle. Pulk had an early take down and lead the match 3-0 until a reversal by Wagner mid-way through the 2nd period started momentum for Wagner. The two battled back and forth but Pulk came up short late in the 3rd period with a fall. Pulk finished the day 3-1 for a 2nd place finish.
In the JV division Gracie Boen, Junior at Tri-County, made her way through a full bracket. Boen defeated Moordhead in the quarter final with a major decision of 11-3. The semi-final match against top seeded Lucy Lawinger was successful for Boen with a fall midway through the second period. A strong match up in the finals against Grand Rapids, they entered the second period with a 0-0 score until a reversal put Boen up 2-0. A late period escape tightened the score to 2-1 going into the 3rd period. Boen would then dominate with a solid reversal and pin with 10 seconds left in the final period. The win made for a 3-0 record for the day and 170JV champion.
Amora Puttbreese, 8th grader at Greenbush-Middle River battled tough all day. In her first match she secured a strong lead against St. Michaels Albertville. STMA battled back, with 3 seconds left in the 3rd period nearfall points awarded to STMA put Puttbrese behind 14-15. Puttbrese fell short of placing rounds.
