A Picnic Shelter for the Middle River American Legion

The Honker visited with Marc Horien about his vision for the upcoming American Legion Picnic Shelter. How did this idea come up? He explains, “For every Annual Trails to Treatments Benefit held in Middle River, a large tent is needed to be put up in case of inclement weather and for people to be able to get out of the heat. Putting the tent up and taking it down is very labor intensive and takes several people. About 2 years ago I suggested to the TTT Committee that we fundraise for a picnic shelter so a tent would no longer be needed. The Committee was supportive, but they said I would need to spearhead the project!”

Marc officially became the go-getter for the project and began by speaking to the Legion Members at one of their regular meetings to obtain permission and support. He also attended a City Council meeting and after his proposal, they too, were supportive. The official journey began with Marc obtaining estimates for the expenses.

The proposed shelter would be located between the Post Office and the American Legion Veterans Memorial where TTT normally sets up the tent for their Annual Benefits. The American Legion would be the official owner since it is on Legion property.

The structure will be similar to the one by the playground at The Legacy Center with the plan to be 24 feet wide, 32 feet long and 10 feet high. The flooring will be a cement slab.

Of course, TTT plans to use the shelter for their Annual Trails To Treatments Benefits, but throughout the year, it also would be available for Goose Fest, Family Gatherings, Community Events etc.

“The current estimate for the structure falls between $20,000-$25,000,” said Marc, “so our fundraising goal is $25,000.”

Starting and completion dates will be solidified once the building fundraising goal is met.” And, he added, “Any extra funds raised would be used for picnic tables.'

Last week’s Fish Fry fundraiser kickoff, which brought in $6,296, was organized by Marc Horien and Mardy Anderson and several people from the surrounding community helped with the fundraiser.

“We would like to thank everyone that helped, purchased a meal, donated or purchased an auction item,” said Marc. “Your generosity is very much appreciated.”

The next fundraising event will be a Freewill Offering Spaghetti Supper on Friday, February 7th at the American Legion in Middle River from 5-8 pm. It will include spaghetti, bread stick, and salad.

Donations can also be made at Border Bank to the American Legion Memorial Park Fund.
