Emery Horien
Emery Horien, 89 of Holt, MN, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2023, at Hillcrest Senior Living, Red Lake Falls, MN.
The funeral service to celebrate Emery’s life will be held 2:00 PM on Friday, July 28, 2023 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt, MN, with Reverend Sheila Michaels Officiating.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday, July 28, 2023. The burial will be held at the Holt Cemetery, Holt, MN. Military honors will be provided by Newfolden American Legion Post 427 and Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard.
Emery Charles Horien was born September 26, 1933 to Edgar and Hilma (Nohre) Horien of Holt, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt, MN. He attended Holt School for eight years and then graduated from Newfolden High School in 1951. Emery was a Boy Scout in Holt Troup 112.
Emery entered the Army on January 19, 1955 for two years and was a Korean War Veteran. He was Honorably Discharged on January 18, 1957. He was employed at Soo Line Railroad in 1957 where he worked until he retired early due to health issues.
On March 23, 1957, Emery was united in marriage to Mildred “Millie” Schmitke. They started out living in Thief River Falls, MN but in 1965 purchased the Florence and Waldimore Wendt farm near Holt. They lived there until April of 2022, when they moved to Valley Home Assisted Living and then to Greenleaf Assisted Living, both in Thief River Falls. In December of 2022 they moved to Hillcrest Senior Living in Red Lake Falls, MN where they lived together until Millie’s death in April of 2023. They celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary in March of 2023. They both greatly appreciated the care received and all of the staff at Hillcrest.
Emery was a lifetime member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt where he served as a Deacon and a Trustee. He was an active coin collector, a member of Thief River Falls Coin Club for many years and served as President of the Coin Club Board. He enjoyed collecting railroad memorabilia, helping with field work and mowing lawn. He and Millie enjoyed attending coin shows and flea markets until their poor health prevented them from doing so.
Emery is survived by his brother Marc (Shirley) Horien of Holt, MN and brother-in-law Bob Skogland of Karlstad, MN; sister-Inlaws Alyce Schmitke of Roseau, MN and Joyce Schmitke-Pricket of Apache Junction, AZ and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and his sisters Darlene Horien-Hallstrom and Arleen Horien-Skoglund; sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws: Freda and John Varland, Agnes and Richard Ostrem, Margaret and Clifford Bugge, Betty and William Waterworth; Amy and Elmer Gutterud; Harold and Doris Schmitke, Arnold and Hedwig Schmitke, Otto and Mary Schmitke, Irvin Schmitke, Martin Schmitke and Carl Jr. Schmitke and Janice Schmitke.
