LaVon Coltom
LaVon Coltom

LaVon Rae Coltom was born on February 1, 1942, in San Francisco, CA to the late Phillip and Alice (McKenney) Nyberg. She attended school in Kennedy, Mn and graduated in 1960. Following graduation, she went on to attend the Minnesota School of Business and worked for Crum & Forster. She was united in marriage to Orrin Coltom on December 27, 1961, at Gustav Adolph Lutheran Church in Strathcona while Orrin was home on leave from the Army and they made their home in Aschaffenburg, Germany for a short period of time before moving back to Strathcona. She and Orrin moved to Thief River Falls in 1964 and LaVon was employed at Dow Key and Wilson Bros. Parts Store. She and Orrin moved back to the farm in Strathcona in 1970 where they farmed and raised dairy cattle. LaVon went on to attend Northland Community College in Thief River Falls, attaining her associate degree (AA) in 1988. LaVon worked as a paraprofessional at the Middle River School for many years before her retirement. LaVon and Orrin continued to make their home of their farm until her passing on March 6, 2023, at Sanford Medical Center in Thief River Falls at the age of 81. LaVon was a member of Gustav Adolph Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and was President of the Ladies Aid and a member of the quilting club. She was also active as Treasurer of Greenwood Cemetery in Strathcona, serving on the board for many years. She is survived by her husband Orrin, her sons Eldon of Strathcona and Jason of Rochester, MN, sister Patra Ginrich of Casper, WY and brother Steve Nyberg of Kennedy, MN. She was preceded by her parents and sister-in-law Carol Coltom. A Memorial Service was held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Collins Funeral Chapel in Greenbush with a visitation one hour prior to services. Interment services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Strathcona in the spring.
